About

Some folks come for the music. Some stay a little longer. The Folk Art Barn is a two-bedroom retreat just outside The Whirlybird — Southwest Louisiana’s underground honky-tonk. Tucked into quiet land, it’s a place to land after the music settles — or begin if you’re coming for stillness. Guests move between two worlds: the quiet of the land, and something happening just down the way. Best rates when you book direct.

Good to know

This is a private two-bedroom home with a full kitchen, open living space, and room to breathe. You’re about 10 minutes from Lafayette, but it feels further out — in a good way. The Whirlybird sits nearby — sometimes quiet, sometimes alive with music, gatherings, and late-night conversations. Some nights you’ll hear nothing but the land. Some nights you might catch the edge of something worth walking toward. There’s space here to rest, write, cook, or just sit still for a while. This place works well for couples, small groups, traveling artists, or anyone looking for something a little different from a standard stay.

Other Details to Note

The Folk Art Barn sits on the same grounds as The Whirlybird. This is not a resort or a traditional rental — it’s part of a working creative space where music, storytelling, and gatherings happen. If your stay overlaps with an event, you’re welcome to be part of it. If you’re looking for complete isolation every night, this may not be the right fit. If you enjoy places with character, rhythm, and a little unpredictability — you’ll feel right at home. We keep things simple, personal, and real out here. If you have questions before booking, just reach out.

Accessibility

Neighborhood

The Folk Art Barn sits on five quiet acres just outside Lafayette, surrounded by open farmland and wide South Louisiana skies. The land was once part of a larger 19th-century homestead known for its crops and cattle, and that rural character remains today. You’ll still see neighboring fields, grazing livestock, and seasonal gardens nearby. Though town is only about 10 minutes away, the setting feels peaceful and removed — with space to breathe and little traffic. A personal vehicle is necessary, as there is no public transportation in the area. It’s a safe, owner-occupied property rooted in local culture, offering both privacy and a true sense of place.

Guest Access

Guests enjoy full private access to the entire Barn. No shared spaces. No interior access from hosts. Just your own 2BR home with kitchen, living room, porch, and parking.

This was a unique stay! Jim went out of his way to accommodate us last minute, even altering his plans to be there on our arrival. And we’re so glad he was, what a wonderful host! He showed us the property, which came alive even more with his presence. We didn’t get a chance to meet Christy, but hopefully next time. The beds were comfy, kitchen had everything we needed, I enjoyed sitting out on the porch and meeting the cats. This is the place for you if you like a little artistic, unique adventure off the beaten path. Thank you both!

Admirers of Folk Art make up a certain kind of tribe. This tribe will love the Folk Art Barn. People that love Cajun Music will love the Folk Art Barn. People that love nature will love the Folk Art Barn. People that appreciate the commitment of folk artists to take one person's trash and make it into another person's treasure will love the Folk Art Barn. I heard the call of a yellow-billed cuckoo and saw an owl in the rafters and a coyote table that could talk. I appreciate people who devote themselves to a life filled with art like Jim - And, Of Course, Christy. Keep on Keepin' On !

Always a treat to stay with Jim and Christy. Especially for someone who loves art, music and the whimsical. As soon as you arrive it’s immediate relaxation. The grounds are beautiful the beds are comfy and everything you need is already in place for you. If it so happens that you need anything at all (rare) it’s addressed quickly. I cannot express how much of a gem this place is, a comfy, cozy true Louisiana treat. Our family will visit Jim & Christy’s property as long as they allow us.

Always a highlight of my year to pass a good time at Jim and Christy’s compound. Comfortable, great vibe, beautiful location, and you might just get lucky and have one of your favorite bands playing on the premises! If you are thinking of coming to South Louisiana (and you should be), you can’t do better than a stay with Jim and of course Christy!
