Good to know

Step into a one-of-a-kind stay: the Folk Art Honky Tonk. Two private bedrooms, two full baths, a kitchen, porch, and living spaces—part museum, part hideaway. Set on a 5-acre folk-art compound in Louisiana’s cultural heartland, it’s a place for artists, dreamers, and front-porch philosophers. Hosted by Jim & Christy, who keep things running and the stories flowing.

Other Details to Note

What to Expect This is not a typical rental—it’s a living, creative space. Your bedrooms are always private. Most days, the Honky Tonk is quiet and relaxed—a true retreat. From time to time, we host music, cultural events, or gatherings. When that happens: • Bedrooms remain private • Shared spaces (including bathrooms and kitchen) may be used by others • The energy shifts from quiet retreat to lively community After events, everything is cleaned and returned to its slower rhythm. We do our best to reflect event dates on the calendar, but if you’re looking for a fully private retreat experience, feel free to reach out before booking. Some folks come for the quiet. Some arrive just in time for the music.

Accessibility

Neighborhood

Unveil the charm of the Folk Art Honky Tonk, part of the Whirlybird Compound, situated on our primary 5-acre residential property, surrounded by an expanse of farmland. This charming space shares a rich history with a grand farmhouse built in the late 1800s by a hospital founder. The original 200-acre property was renowned for its agriculture, and while the historic house now sits on 5 acres, the remaining land remains a functioning farm, boasting lush vegetable production and cattle grazing. This agricultural vista encircles the property, preserving its serene, rural ambience. Set far from the hustle and bustle of the country highway, the Folk Honky Tonk offers a tranquil retreat in an area flourishing with artists. An interesting note for green travelers - the first Tesla Destination Charger in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, is a mere 18 miles away at 501 Old Spanish Trail, Scott, LA.

Guest Access

You’ll have access to the bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, porch, and main living areas of the Honky Tonk. Parking is easy and right outside the building. Your bedrooms are always private and secured with key locks. From time to time, The Whirlybird hosts music, cultural events, or gatherings. When that happens, shared spaces—including the bathrooms—may be used by others for a period of time. After events, everything is cleaned and returned to its usual, more private rhythm.

Jim & Christy were lovely hosts. We were lucky enough to get to stay during Mardi Gras and got to enjoy an amazing band. It made for a great time and was a highlight of our trip. We hope to come back soon, thank you!

The Honky Tonk is a rare gem. It is a museum full of cultural artifacts that give a wide survey of the music, art, and peoples of southern Louisiana. There is an abundance of meaningful choices made in every corner. Jim showed us the "Tower" building as well which feels like a beautiful culmination to a very large vision. So many carefully selected details, the places hums with spirit.

Our historic and scenic highway (a portion once called The Old Spanish Trail) has a bike lane and, although we do not recommend it, we have had at least one guest who rode her bicycle to Lafayette and back on a regular basis.
